Q: A grateful client sent me a lovely fruit basket, but by the time it arrived,
much of it was spoiled. Should I tell her what happened?
A: If you speak up, you risk seeming unappreciative or fussy. Just write a warm
thank-you note and let it go. Meanwhile, consider contacting the gift company to
advise them of the less-than-satisfactory delivery. They'll probably offer to
send a fresh basket immediately. If the present had come from a close friend or
family member, it would be easier to mention the situation -- but delicately. You
could say something like," I have really been enjoying your gift. But in case you
ever order from that company again, I thought you'd want to know that some of the
fruit was spoiled when it arrived. I contacted them and they sent a replacement
basket right away."
